Homestead Exemption Reminder

If you bought a property during the last year, you NOW need to apply for your homestead exemption. We usually send this email out once a quarter as a gentle reminder.

If you sold a home, you can ignore the rest of this post- thank you.

Now that you have purchased your home, you need to apply for your homestead exemption. Which means you do not pay taxes on the first $75,000 your home is valued at.

Your property will get reassessed every 3 years and every July/August, your assessment is available for review and dispute.

If you bought your house in 2018, you have until September 31^st to apply for your homestead exemption.

To file for your exemption, you will need an unpaid Entergy bill and an ID with your property address on it. Bring these items to the 4th floor of City Hall, the Algiers Court House, or the 2nd floor of the Lakeview Christian Center.

If you bought your home after September 31^st and a homestead exemption credit is not applied for on your value, then you can apply for a refund for the days you owned the property in 2018. The refund is through the City’s Treasury Office and could take 3-9 months to process.

Go to nolaassessor.com or nola.gov/pay-taxes/ and from there you can search for your property.

EXISTING HOMEOWNERS

If you own a property in Orleans Parish, now is the time to check your 2018 tax assessment and make sure that if a property is your primary residence, you are receiving credit for your homestead exemption.
