April Community Connect – Lelia Gowland

April Community Connect – Lelia Gowland

As promised, we are excited to introduce the remarkable Lelia Gowland for this month’s Community Connect. With modern advances in technology, we are constantly consuming and exchanging knowledge without giving it much thought. It is now more important than ever to know where our information is coming from and to have trusted, well-educated sources. This is where Lelia Gowland comes in; a New Orleans native, a passionate activist for women’s professional issues, an accomplished writer, speaker, and teacher, her range is truly extraordinary. If you aren’t following her on Twitter, it’s time to start. This Mid-City resident created her company, Gowland LLC, to help women make important career choices and give them the tools to be more effective in their jobs and day-to-day lives. Lelia has created strategies to help women use their natural abilities as leaders to be better negotiators. She addresses the importance of women in the workplace with empowering speeches and potent articles. Her work is not only positively affecting our city, but is also impacting the world by reminding women of their worth in the workplace. Lelia is considered a national expert on gender dynamics in the workplace, a topic that is particularly relevant today. According to the US department of labor, “women make up 47 percent of US workers, 70 percent of mothers with children under the age of 18 participate in the labor force, with 75 percent employed full time”. Among many other recognitions, Lelia was voted one of Gambit’s 40 under 40. We are happy to have helped Lelia and her husband, T. Cole Newton, find a home in Mid-City and we thank them for contributing their ideas and businesses to the culture of our city.
